Slipknot came together in Des Moines, Iowa, in 1995 — nine musicians in boiler suits and masks, each with a number instead of a name.
Their 1999 debut sold in the millions and made the band the face of a generation; "Iowa" (2001) is still regarded as one of the heaviest albums ever to chart. The music includes two percussionists, a DJ and a sampler — beer kegs and baseball bats among the instruments. Singer Corey Taylor fronts the band, which has endured heavy losses in the deaths of drummer Joey Jordison and bassist Paul Gray.
