On 9 July, Jason Newsted stepped on stage alongside Blackberry Smoke at the Greenfield Lake Amphitheater in Wilmington, North Carolina. Together they played Thin Lizzy's „Jailbreak"; fan-filmed video of the appearance has circulated since.

The cameo fits a busy summer. Newsted is on the road with Jason Newsted & The Chophouse Band on the group's first North American headlining tour, which started on 1 July. Ten of the run's 18 dates are support slots for Blackberry Smoke; it wraps with two nights at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville on 24 and 25 July.

It is not about the money, Newsted made clear: he does it „first and foremost for the fun" and because he wants to play with friends. The current line-up features Jesse Farnsworth, Jimbo Hart, Humberto Perez and Robert John-Tucker; Newsted himself handles guitar and lead vocals.

Newsted was Metallica's bassist from 1986 to 2001. He has pursued his own projects ever since; the Chophouse Band plays original material alongside covers of his influences.
