Mike Browning Dead at 62 – Morbid Angel and Nocturnus Pioneer
Mike Browning, co-founder of Morbid Angel and the mind behind Nocturnus, has died aged 62. The US death metal pioneer shaped the genre from the 1980s on.
Mike Browning sat behind the drums and at the microphone when Morbid Angel helped shape American death metal in the mid-1980s. On 13 July 2026 Browning died at the age of 62. Several metal outlets confirmed the news.
Browning joined Morbid Angel in late 1983 and played on the band's early recordings, including the original version of „Abominations of Desolation". As drummer and vocalist he defined the raw sound of those first years in Florida, the heartland of the emerging death metal scene.
After leaving, Browning founded Nocturnus. Their debut „The Key" (1990) stood apart from the rest of the genre thanks to its keyboards and science-fiction lyrics and remains a singular classic. Browning later continued the band as Nocturnus AD, releasing the comeback album „Paradox" in 2019.
Tributes across the scene remember Browning as one of death metal's pioneers. Sources initially gave no details about the circumstances of his death. He leaves behind a daughter.
