Dave Mustaine on Megadeth's „Ride the Lightning" Cover
Dave Mustaine talks about Megadeth's cover of Metallica's „Ride the Lightning" — the song pushed his voice to its limits.

Megadeth have released a new „Behind The Song" video in which Dave Mustaine discusses their re-recording of Metallica's „Ride the Lightning". The title track of the 1984 album pushed his voice to its limits, Mustaine says.
He tried to sing the song and some of it really pushed his vocal ability, Mustaine said, praising James Hetfield's performance in the process. The cover appears as a bonus track on Megadeth's self-titled farewell album, released in January 2026.
The 17th and, in the band's words, final studio album by the thrash legends — their first US number one, including a re-recording of the Metallica classic "Ride the Lightning" as a bonus track.

Mustaine co-wrote the title track but did not play on Metallica's original: he was removed from the band in April 1983, shortly before „Ride the Lightning" was made — though he kept the co-writing credit.
Rather than copy the original solo exactly, Mustaine and guitarist Teemu Mäntysaari split the work. He cannot remember his old part and cannot find any recordings of it, Mustaine said — so they deliberately added their own interpretation, distinct from Kirk Hammett's version.
