Mary Morello has died – Tom Morello mourns his mother

Mary Morello has died at the age of 102. Her son, Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello, announced her passing on social media.

Mary Morello was a schoolteacher who became known as a civil-rights advocate and an opponent of music censorship. In the 1980s she founded Parents for Rock and Rap, a group set up against the warning-label push and the campaign of the PMRC. By her son’s account, she shaped his political outlook.

Tom Morello honored her as the driving force behind his activism. Tributes also came from those around the band and from longtime collaborators. The family did not initially give further details about the circumstances.
